At 2 A.M. on Tuesday morning, Ben and I got into a loaded down Honda Civic, filled with everything we will need for the next few weeks to begin our 6,000 mile cross country adventure. Nineteen hours later we arrived at our first stop in Vail, CO, to stay with my brother for a few days. Driving to Colorado from Memphis, however, means that you have to drive through Kansas. The most exciting thing about Kansas is seeing the world’s largest ball of twine in Cawker City. Now why anybody would want to make a ball of twine that is nearly 8,000,000 feet long and weighs over 17,000 lbs is beyond me, but after seeing endless corn fields and one-light towns for 7 hours straight, I suppose it makes a little more sense. So if you happen to find your
self passing through Kansas on Hwy 24, you need to make a stop in Cawker City and visit one of the modern wonders of the world.
When we arrived last night we were greeted by my brother and his roommates with a warm Vail welcome. The thing about Vail is that the people happen to live in the same place that black bears make their habitation, and at about midnight the neighborhood bear was on the prowl for a late night snack from one of the trash cans. I grabbed my camera to try to get a photo of this common phenomena, but this particular bear was smarter than your average bear, and escaped out of sight. Maybe tomorrow night he won’t be so lucky.
It is truly a glorious sight to walk outside the apartment door and see the Rocky mountains looming above in the distance. I’m very excited to see the beauty of God’s creation, as displayed throughout the Rockies.

YAY! When do you suspect you shall be stoppin' by the Lowes'?
Very Cool!! I'm glad you get to do that. You've got to make sure you tape some stuff to the window and hang your water bottle from the clothes hook, to bring back the real travel experience! Good luck on the trip...call me when you get to San Fran!!!
PS Matt's girlfriend is 7 months pregnant.
